When I was young, I was fascinated by 'thunder eggs' - the volcanic rocks with crystal formations inside. As an adult, I still feel the same way, but I also see the analogy with people. I have been teaching in an art department at a college for many years. The people in my classes are rough artists on the outside at the beginning of each quarter and gradually turn in to 'crystals' by the end of the quarter. It is a fun transition to witness.
